Managing Nutrients to Protect the Bay: Science for Informed Stewardship

Wastewater treatment plants, agricultural runoff, and other modern activities have elevated nitrogen and phosphorus levels in San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. While these nutrients are essential for phytoplankton growth and sustaining diverse wildlife populations, excess nutrients threaten water quality by contributing to harmful algal blooms and low oxygen. 

The San Francisco Bay Nutrient Management Strategy (NMS) identifies safe nutrient levels and guides decisions to protect the Bay and Delta’s ecosystems.

Our Focus Areas

 

Sustainable Nutrient Reductions

Protecting San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta from harmful levels of nutrients begins with regulating the sources, particularly wastewater facilities. Nutrient management and policy decisions focus on infrastructure upgrades to these facilities, and nutrient science is crucial to inform these decisions.


NMS priority studies, including monitoring, modeling, and data analysis, answer key questions: Do nutrient inputs harm the ecosystem? What actions can prevent or reduce harm? Our studies provide valuable insights into nutrient status and trends in the Bay to guide sustainable reduction strategies and protect the Bay and Delta's long-term health.
