A cornerstone to the success of our projects
The Software Engineering (SE) team produces tools critical to operationalizing and communicating the science that both SFEI and our partners develop. The success of our projects is largely attributable to the diverse expertise of our software engineers, whose skills encompass many technical disciplines. Our team resolves low-level security and efficiency issues, advances data modeling and analysis scripts, provides code-based solutions, and creates engaging visualizations, maps, and websites.
Capable Technical Collaborators
In addition to supporting SFEI efforts, we also build unique tools in service of other organizations. These tools synthesize, analyze, and visualize data – the resulting information products inform decision-making regarding our natural resources.
Our software engineers work closely with SFEI staff to identify technical gaps and develop cost-effective, practical solutions. Our team also reaches out to agencies and other stakeholders to lend their expertise to collaborative problem solving.
Web Development
The tools resulting from our collaborations offer enduring value for those who depend on their science-backed insights and data. These tools include EcoAtlas, an innovative geospatial tool with a 25-year history and GreenPlan-IT, s a versatile open-source toolset that helps municipalities plan and analyze the effectiveness of green stormwater infrastructure. Together, our science and software engineering practices produce valuable resources to deliver information needed by decision makers.
Data Visualization
The Software Engineering team is responsible for creating data visualizations and mapping resources that support the ongoing scientific efforts of the Institute. They innovate to bring the latest technologies to projects in service of greater efficiency, deeper impact, and more effective communication. Over the last 15 years, software engineering has gained prominence with successful completion of ambitious and meaningful efforts. These tools display not only data hosted and collected by SFEI and its partners, but also facilitate new mode of community interaction to promote broad-based data stewardship.
As they collaborate with the science teams, the Software Engineering team creates a public face for our data and strives to provide accurate, understandable tools that are useful and informative for scientists, policymakers, and public stakeholders alike.
