Science by Design

At SFEI, making science usable is as important as ensuring it is trustworthy and reliable. Our Science Communications team uses visual design and narrative storytelling to translate scientific findings into accessible, actionable tools and guidance. We put science into the hands of changemakers to protect our communities and the environment against the threats of climate change and pollution, and design a more livable, equitable, enjoyable future.

We believe that science and design are complementary ways of exploring, understanding, and communicating data-driven ideas. When combined, they offer an interdisciplinary approach that encourages diverse perspectives and innovative problem solving to help us address our most pressing environmental challenges. Our team of scientists and designers provides materials that encourage curiosity for the newcomer, facilitate exploration of novel approaches by the naysayer, and deliver communication tools for the enthusiast.

Through science storytelling, planning and design, decision-support tools, and collaborative engagement, we translate science into guidance for Tribal and other government leaders, regulators, planners, landscape architects, engineers, community and environmental stewards, journalists, lawyers, and more. Our designers are skilled at transforming dense data and technical jargon to make them digestible, engaging, legible, and accessible to a wide variety of people, so our work becomes usable to changemakers.
