The Beneficial Baylands project builds upon previous EPA-funded projects to:

• provide essential decision-support guidance and tools for siting, design, and benefit quantification of nature-based shoreline adaptation projects
• support the design of five local shoreline adaptation projects spanning the North Bay, Central Bay, South Bay, and Suisun
• continue to refine the use of nature-based solutions in wastewater treatment

Co-led by the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District and the San Francisco Estuary Institute, the project will accelerate the implementation of nature-based solutions that improve water quality, foster the resilience of bayland ecosystems and shoreline communities, and provide wildlife habitat.

Beneficial Baylands will promote the success of nature-based solutions and generate significant and lasting environmental outcomes for bayland resilience and adaptation throughout the region. By synthesizing years of San Francisco Bay research into decision-support guidance, Beneficial Baylands will facilitate more efficient and science-based implementation planning, incentivize funding for nature-based projects, and reduce regulatory hurdles through consistent, rigorous, and accessible guidance.
