Overview

Accelerating nature-based solutions for sea-level rise adaptation across the San Francisco Bay

The Regionally Advancing Living Shorelines Project, led by the State Coastal Conservancy and the San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI), enhances information sharing, best practices, and knowledge transfer to boost the scale and speed of living shoreline design and construction in the region.

The project’s key activities include:

Creating Regional Living Shorelines Design and Constructability Guidance to standardize and streamline approaches;
Conducting Baseline Monitoring across three shoreline regions to assess ecosystem health and project impacts;
Developing Engineering Concept Designs for Ten New Living Shoreline Projects that offer practical, nature-based alternatives to conventional designs;
Convening the Living Shorelines Collaborative, a platform for stakeholders to learn, exchange ideas, and grow the regional body of practice.

Through scientific monitoring, innovative design, and active community involvement, the Regionally Advancing Living Shorelines Project is setting the stage for living shorelines to become an effective, sustainable solution for climate resilience along our coasts.
