Remote Sensing for Early Detection of Bloom Events
Table of Contents
The 2022 Heterosigma akashiwo bloom prompted a rapid response utilizing near-real-time satellite imagery for chlorophyll analysis. Existing algorithms struggled to capture the bloom's extent, leading to the on-going refinement of a two-band algorithm better suited for coastal waters. This adjusted algorithm has proved effective for operational use, accurately estimating chlorophyll concentrations across various conditions, including non-bloom periods and extreme bloom events.
