Overview

Lower Mormon Slough is a six-mile urban waterway running through Stockton from the Stockton Diverting Canal to the Stockton Deep Water Channel. While this waterway has been heavily altered by channelization, industrialization, and negligence, it remains an important connecting thread in Stockton and the nearby region. SFEI is supporting Restore the Delta and members of the Mormon Slough Restoration Association in the early stages of its restoration visioning, planning, and design and has developed the following products:

• Technical Analysis: In support of the Mormon Slough Restoration Association and Restore the Delta, SFEI conducted landscape-scale analyses of historical ecology, urban biodiversity, and urban heat. These findings are documented in a technical memo and help identify opportunities for future restoration and urban greening.
• StoryMap: The StoryMap highlights some of the rich history of Mormon Slough, which reveals how important this forgotten waterway has been for supporting the people and wildlife in the area now known as Stockton.
• Pilot Sites Conceptual Design: SFEI also developed community-informed conceptual designs for two pilot sites: the Emergency Food Bank and Solari Ranch. These early demonstration projects explore opportunities to strengthen connections between surrounding communities and the slough while providing community functions, cooling, and habitat benefits.
