Implementing monitoring for performance evaluation

Our staff utilizes the WRAMP framework to conduct monitoring to evaluate project performance for a variety of stream and wetland restoration/mitigation projects. We work collaboratively with project partners to select the appropriate set of monitoring methods to answer project-specific questions and evaluate overall performance. Monitoring typically includes both standardized, statewide methods, as well as specialized methods for site-specific aspects of habitat or geomorphic function.
 

Stream and Wetland Condition using CRAM

The California Rapid Assessment Method (CRAM) is a powerful tool for assessing the overall ecological condition of a stream or wetland. It is a rapid, cost-effective method that is easily included in site monitoring. CRAM provides a “common language” to compare condition across space and time. The data provide a high-level overall snapshot of condition, and detailed data that can inform project design, adaptive management, or trigger additional, more detailed monitoring if needed. Habitat Monitoring

Restoration or mitigation projects are typically implemented to benefit a specific species or habitat type. These goals result in required monitoring of the quantity and/or quality of habitat to understand if the project is successful. For example, measuring physical characteristics and water temperature to assess salmon habitat in streams, or monitoring tree cover to quantify the amount of riparian habitat. Monitoring results, combined with qualitative observations, provide a holistic view of the habitat provided by the project

Geomorphic Monitoring

We provide a variety of geomorphic monitoring to assess the geomorphic processes and functioning of streams or wetlands. Data collection is tailored to each individual project, and might include channel cross sectional and longitudinal profile surveys, quantification of the bed grain size distribution, quantification of sediment transport processes, large wood inventory, or identification of reach/regional scale geomorphic processes. This monitoring focuses upon the physical processes and drivers at both the site and the landscape/watershed scale.

 

Project Monitoring Within the Watershed Approach

Project monitoring conducted using the WRAMP framework allows projects to be placed within their watershed or landscape context and meet State Water Quality Control Board requirements within their Dredge and Fill Procedures. 

  • EcoAtlas tools allow each project to be visualized and contextualized with other projects in the watershed. 
  • CRAM stream or wetland condition data allows each project to be compared to other streams/wetlands of the same type, as well as tracking improvement in condition as compared to expected improvement through time. 
  • Other types of monitoring data inform the services and functions occurring within each project’s surroundings.
