Toxic flame retardants leak from these products and contaminate our homes and the environment. High levels in San Francisco Bay residents and wildlife drove state actions to reduce use, exposure, and harmful effects.

Chemical Ban Leads to Bay Recovery
Once a global contamination hot spot for polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants, the Bay is now cleaner after a state ban and industry phaseout. SFEI scientists documented rapid declines in PBDE pollution across species.
Replacement Chemicals Raise Alarms
Alternatives to PBDEs, organophosphate esters now contaminate Bay water at levels of concern for aquatic life. Our investigations support state actions to reduce use of all toxic and unnecessary flame retardants.
