Most coastal pollution starts upstream of the ocean. That means science—and solutions—start upstream as well.

As an urban estuary with 7 million residents and world-class water quality data, San Francisco Bay is a living laboratory for understanding how we affect the areas where saltwater and freshwater meet. Join the San Francisco Estuary Institute at Ocean Hoptimism on Thursday, August 27 from 7-8 pm at Faction Brewing in Alameda to learn how we find and track surprising pollutants in the Bay, and creative ways to address them that benefit both people and nature.

About the Speaker

Sierra Garcia is a science communicator with expertise in writing and telling stories about ecosystems, coastlines, and complex systems science. She supports the San Francisco Estuary Institute’s Clean Water Program, including the world-class Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay. Prior to joining SFEI, she conducted social science research into perceptions of environmental change, developed innovative science curricula for elementary through college students, and reported on environmental topics for a range of regional and national outlets. Sierra is passionate about making science accessible to everyone and breaking down silos. She is a National Geographic Explorer and Fulbright alum.
