This report details plans associated with the WY26 Status and Trends monitoring of toxic contaminants during the wet season in near-field and Bay water for the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP). The RMP initiated a three year pilot study (WY22, WY23, WY24) to quantify contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) in Bay water and in areas near (“near-field” of) expected loading pathways during or shortly after storm events and during the dry season. For the first year of the pilot (Water Year 2022), the near-field design included three targeted, near-field stations and four open Bay stations. Subsequent years added a fourth near-field station in Palo Alto. A recently reviewed report on the three year pilot study (Trinh et. al, 2026) led to the decision to continue to pilot the effort as part of Status and Trends monitoring with some modifications to the sampling plan. This year will add a fifth near-field station in Richmond Harbor and increase the open Bay stations to up to 18 locations covering all segments of the Bay. Samples will be collected at these stations shortly after two storm events and once during the dry season for seasonal comparison. The analytes that are being measured for Status & Trends include PFAS, NTA, and SSC. Add-on special studies will include collections for QACs, plastic additives, and a suite of stormwater CECs. Bisphenols and organophosphate ester sampling will be paused in the short term while we continue to address analytical concerns.
