The Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP) has conducted long-term contaminant monitoring in San Francisco Bay waters since 1993 through its Status and Trends (S&T) program. Following a 2020 program review and growing concern that urban stormwater delivers contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) to the Bay, the RMP launched a pilot in 2021 to resume wet-season monitoring, which had not been conducted since 2010, at both near-field stations close to stormwater discharge points and open Bay stations along the main channel. The pilot targeted per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), bisphenols, and organophosphate esters (OPEs).
