Our Clothes Shed Microplastics
This unique study will be the first to tackle an important question: Are clothing dryers a significant source of microplastics pollution? This study will also evaluate whether commercially available secondary dryer filters can effectively intercept microplastic fibers before they are released into the environment.
Community Science Volunteers
Our laundry habits survey for community volunteers is now closed. This information helps us extrapolate our physical samples to a larger population. We'll report back with results in fall 2026.
SFEI is studying dryer emissions to find out if clothing dryers are a significant source of microplastic pollution in the San Francisco Bay. The study will measure the dryer emissions from single-family homes, laundromats, apartment buildings, and other shared laundry facilities.
