Denitrification and N2O production rates measured in South San Francisco Bay are among the highest observed in estuaries around the world, with the greatest denitrification occurring in the Lower South Bay. Up to 62% of the nitrogen entering the South Bay may be removed through denitrification, indicating a significant natural mitigation process for nitrogen loading.
