Our region faces an immense challenge in adapting to sea level rise. Without action, the San Francisco Bay Area (Bay Area) risks losing shoreline habitats and the critical services they provide, from flood protection to wildlife support to carbon sequestration.

Nature-based solutions can be part of the answer, offering us ways to help protect Bay Area communities–particularly vulnerable shoreline communities–from flooding while also delivering many other ecosystem services. Nature-based solutions can also support the resilience of the baylands themselves, so these important ecosystems have a better chance of adapting to rising waters.

This Resilience Metrics Mapbook provides information to help our region implement nature-based solutions strategically. The mapbook summarizes SFEI’s Baylands Resilience Framework metrics, which assess the resilience of the San Francisco baylands to sea level rise through the lens of ecosystem services. It also identifies opportunities where nature-based solutions can help strengthen baylands resilience.
