SFEI developed a protocol for field-based techniques to quantify in-stream large wood for Pescadero and Butano creeks and their tributaries in San Mateo County, California. The protocol was designed to capture multifaceted data and can be used to assess large wood loading every 3-5 years for determining progress towards meeting established loading targets. Additional datasets captured in the protocol include key piece frequency, log jam structure and function, and possible future loading and mobility insights. These factors are important for resource managers to understand the role of wood in the system at multiple spatial and temporal scales and ultimately to provide well-informed management recommendations. The protocol was developed to support management related to the 2018 Pescadero-Butano Sediment TMDL Habitat Enhancement Plan.
