Characterization of Sediment Contamination in San Francisco Bay Margin Areas: North Bay and Summary of the Dataset for the Whole Bay
Abstract

San Francisco Bay margins (i.e., mudflats and adjacent shallow areas of the Bay that are shallower than 1 foot below mean lower low water [MLLW]) are important habitats with high potential for aquatic life to be exposed to contaminants. These areas were not routinely sampled by the Regional Monitoring Program for Water Quality in San Francisco Bay (RMP) until 2015, when the RMP initiated a pilot survey of surface sediment contamination and ancillary characteristics in Central San Francisco Bay margins. In 2017 South Bay was studied, encompassing Upper South Bay (usually just called the “South Bay” segment in the Bay RMP), Lower South Bay, and “Extreme” Lower South Bay (previously “Southern Sloughs”) margin areas. This report presents results from a 2020 survey of North Bay margin area, including San Pablo Bay, Carquinez Strait, and Suisun Bay, adding to the spatial scope of the prior efforts.
