This data package is a key deliverable for the Research to Understand Impacts of Bay Sand Mining on Sand Supply and Transport in San Francisco Bay and the Outer Coast project.
The total volume of fluvial sediment supply delivered from Bay Area watersheds, including the sand and gravel sized fractions, that reaches the Bay is reduced by the volume of in-channel storage and removal that occurs in 35 of the Bay Area’s flood control channels. Building upon previous work, a regional database on sediment storage and removal in fluvial and tidal reaches was updated to 2020 by surveying and collating data from the channel managers. These data were used to make improved estimates of sand storage and removal, and analyze trends and causative mechanisms. The data vary in completeness and quality between channels. In general, data on sediment removal are more robust than data on sediment storage and grain size. Thus, in order to update and improve estimates of total sediment, sand (0.625-2 mm), and gravel (>2-64 mm) stored and removed from these channels, improved methods for extrapolation and interpolation were developed.
This subtask provides updated estimates of sand and gravel deposited and removed from 35 local flood control channels for the budget period of WY 2001-2020. The report summarizes the final database and the regional estimates.
