...Another idea is to re-create bay beaches to increase resiliency. Beaches were widespread around the bay prior to urbanization and naturally blunt sea-level rise, says Roger Leventhal, the founder and principal of FarWest Engineering and a senior engineer with the Marin County Flood Control & Water Conservation District. Baye, Leventhal, and a historical ecologist, Robin Grossinger of the San Francisco Estuary Institute, have studied "accidental" beaches that have deposited themselves around the bay.

"Beaches are important ecologically,"Grossinger says, "but now we're recognizing their ability to protect the shoreline and buffer and absorb wave energy. And they can also protect marshes-they're like a first line of defense."
