Susan received her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Maryland and her M.S. in Public Health and B.S. in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina. For her dissertation research Susan studied the bioavailability of several classes of sediment-associated organic chemical contaminants in a heavily contaminated urban estuary in Chesapeake Bay, with particular emphasis on the polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants. Prior to moving to the Chesapeake Bay area, Susan was manager of the Sediment Ecotoxicology Laboratory at the University of South Carolina School of Public Health, where her research efforts focused on the toxicity and bioaccumulation of several classes of organic chemical contaminants in benthic organisms. At SFEI, Susan works on a variety of organic chemical contaminant projects, primarily in support of the Regional Monitoring Program.
