David Senn uses ecosystem-scale studies and modeling to study biogeochemical cycles in natural and disturbed systems, and to characterize the transformations, transport, and bioavailability of pollutants, including heavy metals and nutrients. Dave's PhD research in environmental engineering at MIT explored interactions between nitrogen pollution and iron and arsenic mobilization from contaminated sediments of a multi-impacted urban lake. Subsequently, at the Harvard School of Public Health, he explored a range of human and ecological health research questions, and gained experience with exposure assessment, risk assessment, and biomarkers of human exposure. During this time he was principal investigator of two interdisciplinary studies that probed Hg dynamics in various compartments in the northern Gulf of Mexico, including: Hg speciation and controls on methylation in sediments; methylHg trophic transfer in foodwebs; and methylHg exposure among recreational anglers. Prior to joining the Institute in 2011, Dave was coordinating an interdisciplinary water resources management project at ETH-Zürich and Eawag, investigating the impacts of large dams in the Zambezi River Basin in southern Africa.
