Julie Beagle joined SFEI in 2010 as an environmental analyst in both the watersheds science and historical ecology programs. Her work focuses on fluvial geomorphic processes in Bay Area rivers and streams, and she is particularly interested in the physical and biological responses to incision, bank retreat and bank failure in degraded riparian systems and their historical trajectories. She received a master’s from UC Berkeley in Environmental Planning in 2010 focusing on geomorphology and watershed management. Her thesis research culminated in a management plan for an incised Steelhead stream in Napa County, using geomorphic assessments of the watershed to create a predictive GIS model for anticipating bank failures. Before coming to SFEI, Julie worked in the North Bay and North Coast of California on watershed management for salmonid recovery and served a Peace Corps Volunteer in West Africa. She has a bachelor of arts in history and environmental science from Barnard College, Columbia University.

We are pleased to announce the release of our latest historical ecology report, Historical ecology of the lower Santa Clara River, Ventura River, and Oxnard Plain: an analysis of terrestrial, riverine, and coastal habitats. This report is the culmination of four years of research funded by the State Coastal Conservancy and conducted by a broad project team including the San Francisco Estuary Institute, the Southern California Coastal Water Research Project, CSU Northridge, Stillwater Sciences, and other researchers.
