Presentation from San Francisco Estuary Institute on its Delta Historical Ecology Report

Summary: The San Francisco Estuary Institute (SFEI) has released a publication on the historical ecology and landscapes of the Delta entitled “Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Historical Ecology Investigation: Exploring Pattern and Process.” Through a comprehensive study of historical maps, photographs and other references, SFEI’s work documents the transformation of the Delta from the days of early settlement, and was conducted to “provide foundational information needed to develop sound largescale restoration efforts in the Delta.” The project was funded by the California Department of Fish and Game (CDFG) Ecosystem Restoration Program (ERP). Two of the co-authors, Alison Whipple and Robin Grossinger, will provide an overview of this document at the November 15 Council meeting.

The Delta Stewardship Council was created in legislation to achieve the state mandated coequal goals for the Delta. "'Coequal goals' means the two goals of providing a more reliable water supply for California and protecting, restoring, and enhancing the Delta ecosystem. The coequal goals shall be achieved in a manner that protects and enhances the unique cultural, recreational, natural resource, and agricultural values of the Delta as an evolving place." (CA Water Code §85054)
