The San Francisco Bay Subtidal Habitat Goals Project team has released their final report. SFEI working with Dr. Christine Werme, Eric Polson, P.E., and NOAA fisheries contributed to this report with an assessment of artificial structures in the Bay. The primary focus of our effort was on the assessment of creosote treated structures. SFEI and NOAA staff identified and mapped more than 30,000 derelict pilings in 630 piling complexes, reviewed the literature on impacts and benefits of creosote treated structures in the Bay, developed an assessment framework for determining piling structures that may have historical significance, and summarized logistical (removal techniques, disposal, permitting) issues for potential removal of these structures. The final SFEI team report can be found here.
