The joint meeting with the Exposure and Effects (EE) and Emerging Contaminants (EC) workgroups provided a forum for updates on activities in each workgroup, as well as discussion of future studies that bridge the workgroup areas. This discussion focused on the proposed application of bioanalytical tools to monitoring of estrogenic contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), and was generally supported by the workgroups. The first day of the meeting (May 15) also included updates on a study addressing the effects of Cu on the olfactory nerve of salmon, work on the effects of PAHs on juvenile flatfish, plans for a workshop to address the widespread moderate toxicity in the Bay, and plans to develop an index for mesohaline benthic communities. The second day (May 16) focused on developments from the non-target screening of wildlife for bioaccumulative anthropogenic compounds, a review of the monitoring strategies recommended by a statewide panel of CEC experts, conclusions from the synthesis of CECs in San Francisco Bay, information on recent method development in siloxanes, and the development of a 5-year strategy for CEC work in the RMP.
