Historical Ecology

Alameda Creek Historical Ecology Study

South Santa Clara Valley

Introduction to Project

The Alameda Creek Historical Ecology Study will assess watershed conditions prior to significant Euro-American modification, as a basis for understanding subsequent changes in watershed structure and function, and potential options for future environmental management. The project is designed to support several significant current planning efforts, including the Alameda Watershed Habitat Conservation Plan, Alameda County flood control planning, the South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project, and the efforts by the Alameda Creek Watershed Council to bring together the agencies and public to support regional planning. The project is also designed to support ongoing work by collaborators in the Sediment Workgroup and Fish Workgroup. The project is funded by Alameda County and the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission and carried out by the Alameda County Resource Conservation District and SFEI.

Specific topics addressed in the project will include historical extent, type, and character of riparian habitat of different kinds, seasonal and perennial wetland habitats, extent of perennial and intermittent stream reaches, changes in channel plan form alignment, changes in reach functions and uses, changes in channel cross-section, and other related characteristics of the fluvial, riparian, and wetland systems.

Regular updates on project progress will be posted here.
